One Piece (Netflix)
Similar to video game adaptations, the journey of bringing anime into live-action form has been tumultuous, particularly in Western cinema. Projects like Kite, The Last Airbender, Dragonball Evolution, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, and even the Wachowskis' Speed Racer movie have garnered reactions ranging from disappointment to outright scorn, the perception varying depending on the individual you ask.
Nonetheless, the latest rendition of the enduring manga and anime series, One Piece by Netflix has the potential to reshape this trend. If initial screenings are any indication, the live-action iteration of One Piece might just secure its place as the most exceptional adaptation of anime to live-action thus far.
The show chronicles the escapades of the Straw Hat Pirates, who traverse perilous seas, lands, and beyond, all in pursuit of the legendary "One Piece" treasure. This coveted bounty promises to elevate their leader, Monkey D. Luffy, to the esteemed title of "Pirate King." However, not only is the Navy in relentless pursuit of them, but they also face competition from other rival crews with the same objective. With a blend of unique abilities and unwavering camaraderie, the Straw Hat Pirates are poised for their expedition, prepared to stand united and battle whatever comes their way.
Having previewed six out of the eight episodes for reviewers, it's safe to assert that Netflix appears to have drawn valuable lessons from their regrettable experiences with previous anime titles. Moreover, the inherent suitability of One Piece for the live-action format is evident, owing to its richly imaginative backdrop and underlying comedic elements. Realism isn't the primary aim here, given the story's fantastical nature.
One Piece is currently available on Netflix.

The Continental: From the World of John Wick (Amazon Prime)
Throughout the four John Wick films, the tight-lipped tough guy has consistently held the reins of his fate, but one cannot deny the pivotal role played by Winston. Portrayed by Ian McShane, he is the proprietor of the New York Continental Hotel—an oasis of safety and impartial territory within the extensive subterranean realm of assassins in the city. Winston has stood by Keanu Reeves’ John Wick, extending aid or, on occasion, compounding challenges. Now, we are on the cusp of delving deeper into Winston's ascent to influence through the three-part limited series, "The Continental: From The World of John Wick."
The series delves into the genesis of the renowned assassins' haven at the heart of the John Wick saga known as the The Continental Hotel. It follows the journey of a youthful Winston Scott, who finds himself entangled in the gritty urban landscape of 1970s New York City, confronting a history he believed he had escaped. With determination, Winston navigates the enigmatic depths of the hotel's subterranean realm, embarking on a perilous quest to lay claim to the very establishment he will one day rule.
"The Continental" serves as a captivating homage to 1970s New York, complete with the resonating tunes of Donna Summer, scenes reminiscent of Studio 54's glamour, and a copious array of firearms. Mel Gibson serves as the series antagonist, playing the ruthless crime kingpin, Cormac. The series premieres on Prime Video on September 22nd.

Theater Camp (Disney Plus)
The concept of summer camp has consistently served as a unique setting in cinema, embracing eccentricity. However, for the individuals enrolled at AdirondACTS, a theater camp, summer offers a respite away from home, dedicated to cultivating theatrical prowess and nurturing the potential stars of tomorrow's stage. Helmed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman, the film affectionately pokes fun at theater kids, and takes you into a world it seemingly knows quite well.
Every summer, AdirondACTS is orchestrated under the guidance of Joan (Amy Sedaris), ensuring its vibrant operations. However, a twist of fate strikes as Joan slips into a coma just before the camp's commencement. This unexpected turn paves the way for her DJ and influencer son, Troy (Jimmy Tatro), to step into her shoes, much to the dismay of campers and directors alike. The camp's annual tradition involves staging multiple productions, including renowned works such as "The Crucible," "Cats," and "Damn Yankees." Amidst these grand performances, Amos (Ben Platt) and Rebecca-Diane (Gordon) consistently stage their own shows. In the current year, they set out to craft a tribute show titled "Joan, Still," commemorating the camp's absent director. Unified in their efforts, the camp grapples with mounting these performances while contending with Caroline (Patti Harrison), a representative from a neighbouring affluent camp, who seeks to acquire AdirondACTS for herself.
The jokes come quickly, with laughter arising every few moments. The movie brims with one-liners and delightful remarks, skillfully delivered by a stellar ensemble of both young talents and grown-ups. Throughout, the film exudes the frenzied dynamism akin to backstage preparations just moments before the curtains rise, only momentarily slowing in the middle as some aspects of the mockumentary format momentarily fade into the background.
Theater Camp will be available on Disney Plus on September 14th.
