Inventing Anna (Netflix)

Striking a deal with super-producer Shonda Rhimes in 2017 has turned into a valuable long-term investment for Netflix. Essentially making her the streamer’s franchise player, Rhimes has injected Netflix with a number of titles ranging from shows that started on network television (Greys Anatomy, Scandal) to programs exclusive to the platform (Bridgeton). Her latest falls into the latter category with Inventing Anna.

Based on a true story, Inventing Anna is an adaption of a New York magazine article titled ‘How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People’. Delvey is a Russian-born, German-raised scam artist who posed as a wealthy heiress for several years in New York City. The series centers on Delvey, who was accused of scamming some of New York’s elite as well as financial institutions more than $275,000.

Inventing Anna stars Julia Garner (Ozark) as Anna, as well as Anna Chlumsky (Veep), Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black), Katie Lowes (Scandal), Anders Holm, (Workaholics) and Jennifer Esposito (The Boys).

Garner has been turning heads as the foul-mouthed Ruth Langmore on Ozark for 4 seasons now, and actually met with the real-life Anna Delvey in prison to help get down her unique accent.

Inventing Anna hits Netflix on February 11th.

Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber (Crave)

In what’s being described as an anthology series where each season will explore stories of businesses that have affected the culture, Brian Koppelman and David Levien (AKA the guys who brought us Billions) point the lens at the story behind the ride-sharing app Uber in the show’s freshman season.

Being noted as one of Silicon Valley’s most successful and controversial companies, Uber was founded in 2009 by Travis Kalanick, who is set to be portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Trial of the Chicago 7). The show will be told from his perspective, and center on the rise and fall of his tenure as the CEO.

Some heavy hitters round out the cast, including Kyle Chandler (Bloodline), Hank Azaria (Brockmire) and Elisabeth Shue (The Boys) - but perhaps the role everybody has their eyes on is Uma Thurman (Burnt) who is set to play Huff Post co-founder Arianna Huffington.

There is a Calgary connection within the story as well. Now billionaire, Garrett Camp, is a born and raised Calgarian who attend the University of Calgary, and co-founded Uber along with Kalanik. Camp will be played by Jon Bass (Baywatch).

Super Pumped premieres on Crave on February 27th.

The Kings Man (Disney Plus)

In what represents one of the quickest transitions from theatre to streaming for Disney Plus, the crowd-pleasing third installment of the Kingsman franchise comes to Disney Plus on February 5th.

Serving as a prequel for the other two films in the trilogy, The Kings Man goes back to the inception of the Kingsman agency in the early 20th century, when it was formed to stop history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds from starting a war and wiping out millions of people.

Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, The Kings Man offers a well-acted, action-packed spy caper of a movie. Director Matthew Vaughn, who has helmed all three films in the franchise, has also teased the potential of another installment in the franchise, stating if there is demand for it, he’d be on board. Disney Studios is reportedly putting together a ‘for your consideration’ run for The Kings Man in hopes of receiving an Oscar nomination or two - specifically in Best Cinematography, which would certainly help the franchise's chances of moving forward.

The Afterparty (Apple TV+)

Christopher Miller and Phil Lord are names you might not recognize off the top of your head, but they are responsible for some of the most fun projects we have had the last little while like 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, The Lego Movie 2, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and it’s the impending sequel(s). So safe to say, if they are involved with something it’s probably worth a look - enter Apple TV+’s new comedy series, The Afterparty.

After a celebrity singer, played by Dave Franco (6 Underground), is murdered at a high school reunion afterparty, all the attendees try and piece together what happened, with all of them remembering the night differently as they try and catch the killer. Each episode features a different character retelling their version of events, which in turn sets up every episode to be a different genre from romantic comedy, to action comedy, to horror comedy.

The cast is absolutely loaded with comedic actors. Tiffany Haddish (Bad Trip), Sam Richardson (The Tomorrow War), Ike Barinholtz (The Hunt), Ben Schwartz (Sonic the Hedgehog), Ilana Glazer (Broad City), John Early (Search Party). It’s a deep bench and its being capably managed by Christopher Miller who directed every episode.

The first three episodes premiered on January 28th, with a new episode dropping every Friday until March 4th.
